Just a few days ago, South Cotabato News had a chance to visit for the second time Purok 8, Brgy. Kinilis in Polomolok, South Cotabato, where one of the world's most expensive coffee came from- the Kafe' Balos.
We learned from the villagers that Kafe Balos comes from an unusual source- the droppings of palm civet (a nocturnal, cat-like mammal) or "balos" to the B'laan villagers. Droppings are handpicked and collected early in the morning by the villagers and then processed to become- Kafe Balos or Coffee Alamid .

This civet are known to have the taste of only the sweetest red coffee cherries that contains the coffee beans. When eaten by civets, the beans then pass through a natural processing or fermentation inside the civet's stomach which is believed to give the coffee its unique taste and aroma.
In the Philippines, the 70 grams of Kafe' Balos costs Php 500.00, and abroad it is sold at around $700.00 per kilo making it one of the world's most expensive coffee.
Watch the following video of TV Patrol Soccsksargen uploaded on Youtube featuring the Kafe' Balos of Kinilis.

ReplyDeleteIts hard for me to imagine drinking coffee from a cat's poo. :D
ReplyDeleteI heard Civet Coffee is a lot healthier since the beans get the nutrients in the tummy of a civet while it is being digested.
ReplyDeleteI would certainly try this Civet coffee! Good thing our local farmers had started the production of this in demand and expensive coffee.
ReplyDeleteThey say that the coffee is good. But from a poo? I hope I didn't knew. Haha
ReplyDeleteSayang, we didn't get to try Kafe Balos when we went there. We stack up on T'nalak instead. :)
ReplyDeleteDone two or three articles about the World's most expensive coffee and, indeed our very own Balos stand as one of the best. But I am not quite sure if at this moment, it still holds the world's record for the most expensive one
ReplyDeleteI heard of this in a TV show and It's great to know that the world's rarest and expensive coffee is here in the Philippines. I love to try it and indulge myself to its unique aroma.
ReplyDeleteNice! I haven't tried our Kape Alamid yet but I had Coffee Luwak of Indonesia which is close to this one, which is also produce using the help of Civet Cat. :)
ReplyDeletedropping of a civet, now I am curious to taste that coffee. it must be really good.
ReplyDeletei know that tasting civet coffee is so exotic for others , only i oppose to some procedure that they capture the civet and force feed them with coffee beans which is a violation of Wild life Act in the Philippines. and so i suggest that before buying this be sure that the production came from a natural process where droppings are taken from the wild and not from the cages .
ReplyDeleteits look like this is a great taste coffee!
ReplyDeleteIt is great to know how nature works :) The natural process looks like a bit yucky but the end result is one awesome coffee product. I hope Philippines can sustain this ~ http://www.theurbanwalker.net/
ReplyDeleteI heard about Kopi Luwak from Indonesia. Glad to know we also have our own. Hope ours become known worldwide, too.
ReplyDelete700$ per kilo. Wow. That's good business for coffee right there.
ReplyDeletesame ba sila ng alamid? :)
ReplyDeleteMuch as I would like to try this, I simply can't because of where it came from.
ReplyDeleteIm not really into coffee! one cup in the morning and im good! But would love to have taste of this coffee..
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time to heard about Kafe' Balos
